Hi, I’m Damien!

As a Fitness Coach and Sports Massage Therapist, I have learnt that everyone has a unique fitness journey and ensuing battles along the way. I too had my own personal battles including depression, excessive weight gain and loss of motivation and purpose. Drawing from my personal experience, I can say that there is no one-size-fits-all regarding training programmes. So, in recent years, I had to recalibrate my approach with my own fitness career and focus more on sports rehabilitation. This is because I find sport rehab to be very beneficial, not only to athletes but also to regular gym goers.

I also learnt that when it comes to the people I coach, I pride myself in client satisfaction. I additionally love the feeling of giving people the freedom of movement they never thought they are capable of or would ever have again. So throughout my coaching career, I have helped marathon runners, bodybuilders, triathletes and basketball players just to name a few. I will help you, too, by setting realistic fitness goals that can be maintained, whilst consistently assessing and tracking your abilities. So whether your goal is to improve your performance, push your limits or maintain a healthy body, we can do these things together with ease

Benefits of Sports Massage

Massage in general is multifaceted in regards to health and fitness, however it shouldn’t be taken lightly. In day-to-day living, general wear and tear does happen causing your body to be put under various loads throughout the day. Over an extended period of time, this can have a cumulative effect on the muscles and joints causing strains, sprains or spasms. If these are ignored, it could potentially cause muscular imbalances and possibly contribute to inflammation and chronic issues in the future.

Sports massage can also help enhance your general wellbeing, and assist with postop or injury issues. It can additionally improve the function of any lagging muscles, and aid in draining the lymphatic system.

For clients requiring treatment, please make sure there is a clear space within your home and that payments are made in advance of the treatment. If there is an urgent reason for cancellation, please do so within 24hours. Failure to do so will incur in the loss of the treatment and no refunds will be issued.

Personal training is available to potential clients that live around or commute to the Leeds area. For clients that are unable to travel, a training programme can be made according to needs.

SPORTS MASSAGE 101

When is sports massage not suitable?

In some occasions, sports massage isn’t suitable for some people. This may be due to a fresh injury or inflammation in the area where treatment is required. In these cases, treatment may be postponed or restricted to the surrounding areas.

In addition to this, treatment may also be postponed  if a contraindication has been flagged up which potentially could do more harm than good. For example, if a person has had a history of blood clots then treatment wouldn’t commence. This is because some massage techniques may cause catastrophic harm or injury. If a contraindication has been flagged and a decision has been made not to carry on, a disclaimer of any sort will not be accepted irrespective of the potential benefits. Please do not take offence to this as it is purely for your health and wellbeing.

Is sports massage just for athletes?

Sports massage isn’t just for gym goers and athletes. It also benefits office and construction workers, and manual handling job roles just to name a few. You’ve got to remember that muscles will shorten and lengthen throughout the day and, if not addressed, it can lead to overcompensation in other areas. This in turn  can lead to unusual pains in feet, hands and in the back. In the years 2019/20 according to www.hes.gov.uk people took on average 18.4 days off work due to musculoskeletal disorders.

In addition to this, according to www.unison.org.uk, back pain is one of the biggest reasons for people to be absent from work which equates to 12 million days lost per year. Now even though your employer has a partial responsibility for your wellbeing, they will only do what is legally required. This is generally done via risk & DSE assessments and some manual handling short courses. However, what if you have done all of this and you still have issues? This is where sports massage can help reset your body with multiple techniques along with stretching.

During your sessions, you can get feedback on what is potentially causing any chronic issues and inflammation, but also get after-care advice on how to reduce and eradicate these problems. Just to put things into prospective, it currently takes up to 85 weeks in some cases for a knee replacement and then 1 year for swelling to disappear. In addition to this, factor in 12 weeks of physiotherapy to help with walking again. Not only does that drain on your physical health but also your mental health too.

Sports massage therapy therefore can help identify any root causes which may allude to any potential operations. A deep tissue massage can help ease any tension, knots or scar tissue thus reducing pressure on the knee. Additional posture advice and corrective exercises can help your joints last longer.

What to expect after sports massage

After your body has been reset manually, you might feel the following  symptoms;

  • Muscular soreness
  • Runny nose
  • Redness of skin
  • Bruising
  • Joint aches
  • Sleepiness
  • Drowsiness
  • Fatigue

Please treat your treatment as if you’ve attended the gym, and not train for up to 48 hours depending on the level of treatment.

How often should you get Sports massage therapy?

Ideally, if you are new to sports massage, it is advisory to have a maximum of 2 sessions per month to gain maximum benefits. Your first session should be a full body maintenance massage which will help identify any issues. This will consist of lymphatic drainage and a reduction in muscular tension.  During this time, appropriate stretching will be used to help reset the affected areas.

Your second session then can be a partial or another full body massage aiming to go over the affected areas and monitor mobility and progress. Depending on your needs, exercises will be given electronically to help speed up recovery.
